At this years' BAMM Summer School we once again had the pleasure of celebrating a graduating class in Fit to Lead. Each year we find ourselves awarding more and more people with the high levels of certification available through the programme.

As you may have noticed on the menu bar at the top of the page we have added a 'members only' area. This is available via a simple registration and authorisation process. If you are on the Fit to Lead course, simply click the register button and log yourself in. Your account will then be checked in the office and if you are on the course you will be authorised and then able to log in. Don't worry if authorisation doesn't happen immediately as it can sometimes take a short while to process. This area is yours and ought to be populated as you choose. Please do email me at

You have your professional skills and knowledge base – and you will have a plan to improve and develop these, day by day, year on year. But what about the skills and knowledge you need as a clinical leader?
Do you have the range of personal skills you need to be effective?
Do you know enough about your own service, the organisation – and the wider NHS – to excel in a leadership role? Do you know enough about yourself – the areas in which you shine, and the areas you need to work on – to do the job properly? Can you demonstrate that you are taking your personal development seriously?
As a clinical leader you take on responsibilities that are demanding and complex – can you show that you are equipping yourself properly to do the job as well as it needs to be done? Do you have leadership experience and expertise, but no obvious way of gaining recognition for it?
Your development as a clinical leader is a journey, with many challenges en route. Each journey is different and unique to the individual clinician.
Fit to Lead, BAMM’s personal and professional development programme starts from the premise that the sheep-dip ’one size fits all’ approach to effectiveness as a leader simply does not work. Fit to Lead focuses on you, who you are, what you have done and achieved already and where you need to get to in terms of your own development as a confident and skilled clinical leader.
